For centuries Zanzibar has been a crossroad of cultures and a calling port for anybody travelling in East Africa or doing business around the Indian Ocean. As a consequence, its population is a very rich and colourful mixture of different ancestries (African, Persian, Omani and other Arab states, and Asian), enriched nowadays by the continuous influx of people from the Middle East, India, China and Europe. The population itself has around 700,000, forty percent of which live in Stone Town.
