Zanzibar's currency is the Tanzanian Shilling, which currently (September 2017) exchanges at a rate of around 2,238 against the US Dollar and 2,671 against the Euro. This currency is valid and accepted for local transactions, but hard currencies (mainly the US Dollar) are necessary for certain business and governmental payments (Visas and Taxes, Entrance Fees to National Parks, Ferry Boats and Air Tickets, Diving Centres, Hotels and others). Exchanging money is relatively easy in Stone Town, where banking offices and foreign exchange bureaus are around. They trade with cash money mainly, traveller cheques are difficultly being accepted. Withdrawing cash (only in Tanzanian Shillings !!) is possible from several Automatic Teller Machines most only located in Stone Town. Payment with credit card is possible in many business like hotels.
